Spray Tanning 101

About Your Tan

Our solution is paraben, gluten, nut allergen free and 100% vegan. The main ingredient in the solution is DHA, which is derived from sugarcane.

Although there is no ‘color chart’, you can choose your desired color that ranges from a healthy glowing tan to a deep, dark tan and we will guide you toward a choice that will work well with your own natural skin color. Norvell’s sunless solution works with your skin’s natural chemistry, by molding to its tone, therefore no two people will have the exact same result.

The product applied to your skin MAY contain instant, cosmetic bronzers; these are temporary and WILL wash off.

Our professional, female airbrush team is comfortable with whatever you would like to wear. You can wear a bikini, bra and underwear, topless or go nude. Disposable undergarments are available if needed. Please note, all males are required to wear underwear.

A Norvell airbrush tan will last anywhere from 7-10 days depending on:

  • How much time you spend in the shower

  • What products you use on your skin, body, and hair

  • How often you exercise and sweat

  • How fast your skin naturally exfoliates

Before Your Tan Checklist

Exfoliate from head to toe preferably the day prior to your service. Be sure to exfoliate with a pair or exfoliating gloves/washcloth or a loofah. Avoid body scrubs that have an oil or cream base as they can leave a residue on the skin that can create a barrier between skin and the tanning solution. Similarly, to post tan care, it is important to use a PH balanced cleanser. Cetaphil, La Roche Posay and Cera Ve are all great options. Avoid any products that are labeled ‘extra moisturizing’ or contain salicylic acids, retinols, alpha-hydroxy, exfoliating beads, fragrances, and dyes.

Avoid using deodorant, oils, makeup and moisturizers before your Spray Tan appointment as it will add a barrier on your skin and affect your results/development. If you are coming to an appointment directly from work, bring along baby wipes or moist towelettes to remove any solutions that could create a barrier.

When possible, always shave at least 24 hours prior or wax 1-3 days before your Spray Tan appointment. Same day waxing could lead to uneven results due to the opening of your pores.

Remove all jewelry prior to your Spray Tan and try to leave them off for at least 8 hours after. (Necklaces and bracelets could remove part of the tan)

Try to wear dark, loose fitting clothing and footwear to and from your Spray Tan appointment. This will help avoid any rubbing or possible color transfer to light colored clothes. The products we use are water soluble, but they do not wash out of all fine fabrics. It is always best to wear garments that you do not mind getting product on. We can also provide disposable undergarments if needed.

After Your Tan Checklist

DHA can take up to 24 hours to fully develop. During this time, it is important to refrain from moisture build up on the skin (e.g., sweating, swimming, rain, showering, pedicures, massage). If you must shower prior to the 24 hour waiting period, use a warm water rinse only to freshen up. This will lessen the overall results of your tan.

Your first shower will be with plain water only to avoid stripping of color or interrupting the development process of the tanning solution. During your first shower, the color you see running down the drain is NOT your tan, it is just the cosmetic bronzer rinsing off. Do not scrub your skin and avoid any products that contain exfoliating properties such as bar soaps, salicylic acids, retinols, alpha-hydroxy, exfoliating beads, fragrances, and dyes. This can result in stripping your color off after your spray tan in an unattractive way or cause uneven fading of the tan. It is also important to use a gentle non-acidic body wash and avoid bar soap as it can strip your tan. Avoid long hot showers and baths and scrubbing the skin excessively. Pat your skin dry after showering.

Chlorine in swimming pools and hot tubs can remove or shorten the longevity of your tan; saltwater and sand can also prematurely remove your tan, especially on the feet / ankles. Take care when exercising as friction and excess sweat may cause your tan to fade prematurely or unevenly.

Do not moisturize the day of your tanning session but make sure you do moisturize every day after your first shower. Moisturizing frequently after your Spray Tan will help your tan last! We recommend the Hempz line of moisturizers.

The tan on your hands and face will fade much faster than the rest of your body. It is inevitable due to washing and the amount of daily contact.

A spray tan does not contain SPF! You still need to use a product with SPF on a daily basis to avoid sunburn and skin damage.
